What causes uneven tone and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in men

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) occurs when skin trauma—acne, shaving cuts, environmental irritation—triggers excess melanin production as part of the healing response. Unlike surface dullness, PIH deposits pigment in the deeper epidermis and upper dermis, creating persistent dark spots that don't fade without intervention. Men experience higher rates of PIH than women due to several factors: shaving creates repetitive micro-trauma that triggers inflammatory cascades; delayed skincare adoption means PIH accumulates over years without correction; and higher melanin density in certain skin tones makes post-inflammatory marks more pronounced and longer-lasting.
